September 2013 Program

PROGRAM: “HAWAII VOLCANOES” by WENDY DUKE

This was a wonderful slide-show program, along with some samples of Wendy’s unique artwork.

Wendy and Lee lived in Hawaii for four years in the most beautiful area (4000 feet above sea level in a cloud covered forest) near the volcano fields.

Her talk included local history, people, geology and the many aspects of the very dangerous volcano fields.

Be careful where you walk and always be friends with Pele, the volcano gods - these were important factors when living near an active volcano.

Black sand beaches and lava rock with beautiful green peridot were highlighted, as well as treks though underground lava tunnels.

Thanks Wendy for a delightful presentation! And thanks to all the members who brought in Hawaii-related rock samples from their collections to help Wendy illustrate the materials of the area.
