Past Field Trip Details - JMU Mineral Museum
Official Field Trip Notice of the Shenandoah Valley Gem & Mineral Society
When:
Saturday, February 7th, 2015, 8 am – noon
Where:
Field trip to JMU mineral museum and lab for paid members. (You may pay that day.)
Directions:
I-81 North to Exit 245; turn left on Port Republic Road
--or--
I-81 South to Exit 245; turn right on Port Republic Road
Proceed to South Main Street (Rt. 11) and turn right at the light
Proceed northward on South Main Street to the third traffic light, then turn left onto West Grace Street
Proceed to the traffic light on South High Street (Rt. 42); Memorial Hall (the old Harrisonburg High School) is directly in front of you
Go straight across South High Street (Rt. 42). The Mineral Museum is on the left (south side) along Grace Street; Entrance "E" to the building.
Park either in the front of the main building or continue on Grace St. to the back parking lot. The lab is located one story down after entering the Museum entrance to the left.
After entering the building at Entrance “E”, make an immediate right. The museum is at the end of the hall.
Bring your own samples - equipment will be available to test for composition and identification.
Microscopes will be available as well to see those tiny crystals that Mike told us about.
Dr. Kearns allows us to take specimens home by making a donation to the geology department (cash or check).
